Sony Press Conference Notes

Sony had a pretty strong showing this year. They highlighted so many different titles, it took a while to gather all of it. They came out and apologized right off the bat, which was good to get it out of the way to make room for all of the games. They started strong and ended strong. I guess Kevin Butler wasn't right for the time, as they probably wanted to appear very professional, which makes sense.

A few new services for Sony were announced, one at the very beginning, which was CinemaNow. It seems like another Netflix type application, not too sure on this as of yet, or if it will have a subscription fee. The other service they somewhat previously announced was Playstation Suite, which will be bringing Playstation gaming to non-Playstation things like Android phones. Sony then focused on what it does best, gaming.

Uncharted 3
They started the show with one of their biggest titles of the year. This game looks absolutely stunning. Everything about it seems to be improved upon from the first two, which were already fantastic. The fire, sand, and water mechanics really seem to be outstanding. The game releases on November 1, 2011. Check older blog posts for more information on Uncharted 3.

Resistance 3
Resistance 3 was also shown, which it would have been nice to see Move compatibility demoed, but I guess the whole show didn't need to be about the move. The game looks really cool, and Insomniac never disappoints with their weapons, and more are featured here. The game releases September 6th, 2011. Also, a bundle was announced, similar to the SOCOM 4 bundle, where it comes with a Move, Navigation Controller, PS Eye, Sharpshooter, and the game for $150. Definitely a good intro bundle for those who don't already own Move.

Team Ico and God of War Origins Collection
We've known about the Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection for a while, and it finally got a release date today. God of War origins was also confirmed, with a release date provided as well. Both of these are scheduled for September.

Move Compatibilty
Sony focused a bit on Move, just outlining a few games that will be enabled, instead of focusing their whole conference on it. Bioshock Infinite will feature move compatibility, as well as the new Star Trek game. Older games will also be given a Move treatment, including Infamous 2 and Little Big Planet 2.

Medieval Moves: Deadman's Quest
This game was probably the weakest part of their conference. It really seemed like a generic rail shooter, that the Sports Champions team applied their established game on to. It really didn't impress, and didn't look great either. Its scheduled for Fall 2011 though.

Two New Exclusive Games

  • Dust 514 looks crazy. Its going to be the first cross-platform shooter, and its Playstation exclusive, so this means Playstation 3 will be teaming up with PC for this one. Its a space shooter that looks very interesting and shows a lot of promise. It will also have a Vita tie in somehow. This game is releasing in Spring of 2012, with a Beta starting at the end of this year.
  • Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was announced, which was teased in the Sly Collection. This will be the 4th game in the series, and for fans of the series, shouldn't disappoint. It releases in 2012.

Starhawk
The sequel to Warhawk, Starhawk made an appearance at E3, but it was short. It was mainly a mention of the game, and a trailer. It looks pretty cool, as it was announced about a week ago. The game will be out sometime in 2012.

Speaking of Exclusives...
A few exclusive deals were announced with 3rd party developers. Bioshock 1 will be included on the Blu-Ray for Bioshock Infinite. Saints Row the Third will have an exclusive multiplayer mode. SSX will have an exclusive mountain, Mount Fuji. Need for Speed The Run will have 7 extra cars. The MOST IMPORTANT of these, though, is that Battlefield 3 will include Battlefield 1943 on the disc.

Sony Didn't Forget 3D
They announced a Playstation branded 3D TV, to introduce gamers to 3D gaming at an affordable price. Bundled with a pair of glasses, HDMI cable, Resistance 3 and a 24" TV, this bundle will be available at $499. The coolest thing about it, though, is that while playing split screen with two pairs of glasses, which are only $69 each, you will each get your own screen with the glasses on.

Of course, the best for last: Announcing Playstation Vita

Right away, lets get the pricing and release date out. It will be out this Holiday, 2011 for only $249 for the wifi model, and $299 for the 3g model. They also featured a bunch of sweet games as well, including Uncharted, Ruin, Modnation Racers, and Little Big Planet. Most of these games will have a cloud saving method, and have PS3 compatibility. Let's get to the games.

Uncharted Golden Abyss
This is being developed by Bend, rather than Naughty Dog, but they've done a good job with IP's in the past. It looks amazing, especially on a handheld. It really seems to play well too, and isn't as gimmicky as some thought. The climbing on a controller can be frustrating at times, and this seems to eliminate that with the touch screen.

Ruin
Ruin is a cross-platform RPG game, which will be released on both the PS3 and the PSVita. It looks great, and seems to play well too. Not too many details emerged, but the gameplay looked fun, and Playstation can always use some more RPGs.

Modnation Racers and LittleBig Planet
These two games look to really emphasize the Play, Create, Share motto that Sony has established. The seamless creation tools look amazing, and there will be a lot of cross platform integration as well.

Sony had a great show this year, with so much packed in that they went over on their time. They didn't really surprise too much, but it wasn't needed. There isn't too much doubt for 2012 now, with a few new titles announced, and exclusives at that. 2011 will end with a huge bang, and 2012 will continue the show.
